The Maldives has urged against singling out nations for Islamophobia in South Asia, citing that it could affect “religious harmony”. This was after Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, had recently alleged that India is actively promoting Islamophobic agenda. The allegation had been made during a meeting between the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ambassadors to the UN.

“Singling out India…home to over 200 Million Muslims, alleging Islamophobia would be factually incorrect and detrimental to religious harmony in South Asia,” the Maldives had said during the meeting.

Religious tensions in India which had risen last year due to its citizenship law, which some said was targeting Muslims, had ceased amidst COVID-19, according to Indian media reports.
