Despite the country being under partial lockdown, Bangladesh on Friday recorded the highest ever single-day casualties due to the COVID-19. At least 77 deaths have been reported, said a report in the Daily Star.

So far, 9661 people have died of the virus in the country. Earlier on Thursday, the country reported 74 deaths. Overall, the death rate remained 1.42 percent. It recorded around 5400 cases on Friday, taking the total number of infections to 6,78,937.

Earlier this week, the government has expressed concern over the COVID-19 situation. Despite a week-long lockdown, people remained careless. The country’s health infrastructure came under heavy strain, and most hospitals are operating on the edge.

So far, this week, the government has exempted factories and mills from the lockdown restrictions. However, with no slow down in the COVID-19 cases, the government is all set to go for a strict, complete lockdown from 14 April. Only emergency services would be allowed with no exemptions to any other sectors.

A report also indicated that more young people are being infected in this third wave. However, casualties among them are still low. According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), 68.8 percent of the people who tested positive for coronavirus on April 5 were aged between 19 and 48 years.
