The national COVID-19 task force is fully prepared for the surge expected within the next few days, says Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed
Male: The national COVID-19 task force is fully prepared for the surge expected within the next few days, says Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed.
Minister Waheed and Minister of Home Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdulla joined the routinely press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) on Monday afternoon, where both ministers shared the latest updates of the COVID-19 impacts in the Maldives.
As such, the Minister noted that the Maldives will see a surge in COVID-19 cases within the next few days and that the task force has identified it and is ready to face it. Further, the authorities predict the country to overcome the surge during July.
It is important to work together in unity and maintain the current safety measures implemented by the government, in the face of the COVID-19 surge, said Waheed, who added that preparations are underway to serve the entire Maldives when isolating individuals.
In an earlier press conference, Consultant at the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Dr. Sheena Moosa disclosed new projections for the Maldives in the face of the pandemic, the “projected infections”, which predicted the Maldives to observe a “COVID-19 peak” on May 31, when 1,600 cases are expected to unfold.
She revealed that the Maldives is yet to experience a “true peak” due to the effectiveness of the lockdown imposed across the Greater Malé Region, however, authorities have predicted a sudden surge within the next two weeks.
Disclosing the projected infections, Dr. Sheena stressed that only a few of these projected cases will be identified on that day.
Further, Dr. Sheena had revealed that authorities will face challenges in identifying the extent of the spread of the disease then, due to the country’s current testing capacity.
