The Ship of Life
On the sands where I now stand
The grains can bear my weight no more,
On the sands where I now stand
The grains can bear my weight no more,
When will the moving ship of life, I wonder
Cross the seas to the other shore.
The one that waits with open arms
For all who board the ship of life,
The ship that never promises a thing
With Life, on the edge of a carving knife.
The seas it sails are full of tales
Of those who sailed before,
The strong, the weak, and those who were meek
Palaces, Gardens, and the Corner Store.
They’re all there lying somewhere
Odd shapes turned to Dust,
Magnificent glory all turned hoary
Iron men covered by Rust.
And, all they ever leave behind
Are memories, a shadow, a story,
Someplace in the pages of Man
That we call his, History.
And, these too don’t stay for long, either
Altered, sadly, to suit the times,
Re-written are the stories all
The ever-changing Pantomimes.
The ship of life sails along
To its own melody, rhyme and song,
Will there be another, who can tell ?
The “yes” maybe right, the “no”, wrong.
