Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan, are among the top ten least liveable cities in the Asia-Pacific region as per the 2021 edition of The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (The EIU) Global Liveability Ranking.
The pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have directly affected the liveability of cities around the world, the report says, highlighting the ratings of some of the cities rated better earlier.
Dhaka ranked fourth in the list of the least liveable city and while Karachi seventh.
“There’s been quite a big shake-up in terms of, certainly the top 10, but also right throughout the ranking, based upon the COVID-19 situation,” the report noted. Strained healthcare infrastructure around the world also degraded the quality of life in many cities.
Syrian capital Damascus is the least liveable city in the world, according to the list. Auckland of New Zealand is the most liveable city. Wellington is another New Zeland city featured in the list of the top ten liveable cities. Four Australian cities --Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, and Melbourne-- were among the top ten liveable cities.
