The number of the  COVID-19  cases in the Maldives on Monday crossed 12,000, informed The Health Protection Agency (HPA) as reported in Sun news. 

The total case count in the Maldives stands 12009, of these 11, 132 have already recovered. 
The biggest outbreak in recent time was reported from a resort island, Kadima, where 60 people were found infected with the virus.

According to HPA, three foreigners were among those who found infected with the virus on Sunday. Currently, the archipelago has 830 active cases in total. 21 cases on Sunday alone came from Greater Male region and 3 from other atolls.

The government is pulling out all the stops to keep the spread in check in order to revive the economy after the COVID-19 shutdown. The revival of the tourism industry in the Maldives is crucial for the government as the industry generates a major chunk of revenues for the government. 

For sustained recovery in the sector, the country needs to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus. Fitch Ratings, who recently downgraded the Maldives’ credit rating, said in its report the country still has a long way to go to achieve full recovery in the tourism sector.
