The Maldives parliament has voted to remove Juvenile Court Judge Abdul Baree Yoosuf from his post, Sun news reported. The judge is considered close to the Maldives’ former president, now jailed, Abdullah Yameen. 

Interestingly, Baree was also one of the judges who had sentenced the former president and now speaker Nasheed to 13 years imprisonment during the reign of Abdulla Yameen. Nasheed is a known roval of Yameen. 

The voting in the parliament came after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) forwarded an inquiry report to the Judicial Committee of the parliament for action. The JSC investigated the Judge for multiple charges like benefiting from the embezzled funds of the MMPRC scandal, failing to disclose his assets information to JSC. 

The JSC forwarded its report on Baree to the parliament on 17 November. A total of 62 parliamentarians voted for his removal while just one opted against the motion. 

The multi-million dollar scam in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) rocked the nation during the tenure of Abdulla Yameen. Yameen and his deputy have already been convicted in the case.
