Maldives’s election commissioner resigns
Maldives’ Elections Commission Chairman Ahmed Shareef has resigned without disclosing the reason behind the move
Maldives’ Elections Commission Chairman Ahmed Shareef has resigned without disclosing the reason behind the move. He headed the election body for more than three years and oversaw the crucial 2018 general elections.
On Tuesday, Shareef took to Twitter, expressing satisfaction in having “conducted sincere and dedicated work over the course of the last three national elections”. He also added that he would continue to serve people in different capacities.
He was appointed by former President Abdullah Yameen as the chief of the Elections Commission just days ahead of the 2018 presidential elections.
As the EC chairman, he oversaw three major elections - the 2018 presidential elections, the 2019 parliamentary elections, and the 2020 local council and women’s development awards held this year after being postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
