Afghanistan’s civil aviation ministry estimated that the country’s civil aviation sector has suffered a loss of around $100 million due to the COVID-19, TOLOnew reported.

Two Afghan airlines, Ariana Afghan Airlines and Kam Air, suffered around $40 million losses while the Afghan Civil Aviation Authority faced a loss of $60 million in comparison to the last year’s incomes.

Head of the Afghan Civil Aviation Authority Mohammad Qasim Wafaeezada said multiple plans, including infrastructure improvement in Hamid Karzai International Airport, would be implemented in the next few months.

He also defended the government’s support and help to the Afghan aviation sector, saying despite these adverse conditions none of them faced bankruptcy.

He informed the government would now focus on infrastructure development of the sectors, including the construction of a new terminal in Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

Although the head of the Hamid Karzai International Airport, Syed Omar Saboor, stressed the need for construction of a new airport in Kabul. He also suggested that the new airport should be built in Logar province, southwest of Kabul, and should be completed by 2023.
