Bangladesh and the Maldives have signed four memoranda of understandings, including establishing the Maldives-Bangladesh Joint Commission on Comprehensive Cooperation. 

The agreement was signed during the two-day visit of Maldivian President Mohammad Solih to Bangladesh, who was participating as the guest of honor in the golden jubilee celebration of Bangladesh. 

The two countries also signed an MoU to exchange and cooperate in the fisheries sector. An MoU on the establishment of Bilateral Consultations and another one on the establishment of cultural exchange programs were also signed. 

In a joint press conference with Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momin, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Sahid said the talks between the leaders of the two countries would help enhance the bilateral ties for mutual benefits. 

“More agreements were being discussed, notably in preferential trade and investment, customs matters, and avoidance of double taxation,” Shahid said in the press conference. Issues of sustainable development, security, and climate change were also discussed. 

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national carrier of Bangladesh, would soon start flights to the Maldives, announced Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her meeting with Solih. 

Describing the contribution of Bangladesh founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Shahid said he was a timeless icon and a “champion of democracy and freedom.”
