Indian envoy in Bangladesh now pushes for Covaxin

With the supply of Covid vaccine Covishield disrupted, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram Doraiswami is now pushing for another option – Covaxin produced indigenously by his country.
Amid high domestic demand, the Serum Institute of India – which has been manufacturing the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine Covishield – has failed to keep its supply commitments to Bangladesh.
Doraiswamy said India was ready not only for trials of Covaxin in Bangladesh, but also for co-production, Dhaka Tribune said.
Covaxin has been developed on Indian soil by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV).
Doraiswami reiterated that for Covaxin, there is also an offer to co-produce, which remains on the table.
