The Maldives on Wednesday charged its former defence  chief Major Gen Ahmad Siyam (retd) for misusing his official position during his tenure as the chief of defence force between 2017-2018, Sun news reported.

On December 23, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) forwarded its recommendation to the Prosecutor General Office to bring charges against the former chief. The commission found the misuse of official position to accommodate his father in the Maritime Rescue Centre of the defense forces.

The report also accused him of allowing the residential permit to his father in the residential facilities of the rescue center. According to norms, the facilities could only be used by defense personnel, not by civilians. Gen Siyam violated this norm.

The father of the former’s chief also used the services of the commissioned officers at the government expenses. He also used the government resources which he not entitled to in the first place.

Siyam’s action equated to conferring benefits from a facility run at state expense to someone who was not entitled to it through misuse of official position, the report noted.

The report also said commissioned officers can’t be assigned to services of civilians unless that falls under their duties and responsibilities.
