Opposition parties in the Maldives are set to protest across the country as its leader and the former President Abdullah Yameen completes a year in prison, reported Edition.mv.

Former President Abdullah Yameen, who has been sentenced to five years in prison involving a money laundering case, has appealed against his conviction in High Court. The opposition parties in the Maldives, the People’s National Conference (PNC) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), have planned several protests under the theme of “Maldives against injustice”. 

The opposition parties said they would discard the protective measures put in place by the country’s Health Protection Agency (HPA) to continue protest against the former president’s wrongful incarceration. 

MPs from the opposition parties on Monday also brought a no-confidence motion against Home Minister Imran Abdullah. The home minister hinted that the move by the opposition was to pressurize him in releasing former President Yameen.

“I will not be the orchestrator of the release of an inmate imprisoned due to such political pressure,” the minister responded to the opposition in the parliament.  

The country’s former President Abdullah Yameen has been convicted on the charges of money laundering involving Maldives Marketing and Public Relation Corporation (MMPRC).
