As a number of shark attacks have been reported, the Maldives Tourism Ministry has announced that shark feeding is illegal.

Tourism Ministry in a circular to all tourist establishments, dive centers, and excursion providers have stated that shark feeding is illegal under Clause 1, Section 13 of Regulation on Recreational Diving, according to SunOnline International.

It further said that “it is important that all tourism activities are conducted in harmony with the environment and biodiversity, and in accordance with the laws and regulations of Maldives.”

Officials said that some tourist establishments offer shark feeding in their excursion packages and this has led to the increasing number of shark attacks. The circular was to remind all tourist establishments offering such services as part of their tour package.

Tourism Ministry has instructed all concerned stakeholders to abide by regulations, especially those that concern the safety of tourists and employees.
