Soon after Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Oli recommended the dissolution of the lower house of parliament in the country, several wings of the ruling Communist Party, NCP, held protest rallies on Sunday, reported the Himalayan Times.
Fractions close to Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the Oli’s main rival in the party, held rallies against the decision of dissolution of the house, calling it unconstitutional and unilateral. People, supportive of Madhav Kumal Nepal and other senior NCP leaders, also participated in these protests on Sunday.
Faced with severe resistance from his own party, Prime Minister Oli on Sunday morning called an emergency meeting and recommended dissolving the lower house. The move irked the faction led by the party’s co-chair and Oli’s rival, Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The Dahal faction wanted Oli to resign from the post of the prime minister to clear the way for another leader.
“The prime minister has lost the majority in the parliamentary party, central committee and the secretariat of the party,” Bishnu Raijal, a central committee member of the NCP, was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Instead of seeking a compromise within the party, he chose to dissolve parliament, he added.
The party is now planning to take disciplinary action against PM Oli’s unilateral Sunday decision. Reports in local Nepali media say the Party may soon show him the door.
