The vaccination drive in Sri Lanka has been picking up pace lately, marking the highest number of Covid-19 vaccines administered in a single day in Sri Lanka, 412,111 Saturday last week. The continued supply of vaccines helped the government in the drive.
Chinese Sinopharm remains the most widely used vaccine in the country. On Saturday, 342,342 Sinopharm doses, was administered to people. 69,830 doses of the Moderna vaccine had also been administered to reach this total.
So far, the government has procured 12.15 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines; Of which, 72 percent of vaccines have been purchased.
Sri Lankan armed forces are also conducting vaccination drives in many hospitals they are tasked to run.
Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) recently alleged that the number of Covid-19 vaccine doses supplied to the vaccination centers operated by the health sector had been significantly reduced by health authorities, as a higher number of doses were being channeled to the new vaccination centers run by the tri-forces.
State Ministry of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Secretary Dr. S.K. Ratnayake denied the allegation and said the difference was due to the effective vaccination drive conducted by the armed forces centers.
