NATO's senior civilian representative to Afghanistan, Stefano Pontecorvo, speaking on the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1325, said Afghan women’s rights are not negotiable and durable peace should protect these rights, Tolonews reported.

Women have been at the forefront of change in Afghanistan in the last two decades, their rights are not optional or negotiable; it is the most powerful tool to reach peace and make it last, Stefano added.

He said, “Durable peace must build on their achievements, protect their rights, and provide a solid platform for Afghan women to keep fighting for equality.” Reminding the international community about the role played by Afghan women, he said, for any lasting peace protecting rights irrespective of genders is necessary to make any peace durable in Afghanistan.

A statement released by the UN mission in Afghanistan reads, “We reiterate our enduring support for the women and men on the negotiating team of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan who are championing the rights of women,” the statement added.”
