Maldives to order intelligence audit of security forces

Days after the failed assassination bid on former president Mohammed Nasheed, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih said the government will soon order an intelligence audit of national security forces.
He made the remarks after having visited and spoken to former president Mohamed Nasheed at ADK Hospital. A review of the country’s security forces is already underway, he informed. He also sought a detailed report on how security forces failed to anticipate the attack on Nasheed, Raajje TV reported.
Solih claimed that the audit would reveal flaws in the intelligence framework, and would clarify why there had been no explicit reports of a threat to Speaker Nasheed's life despite the imminent attack.
It was clear that intelligence frameworks would need to be strengthened, in addition to increasing security for high-risk targets as well. The government is all set to introduce sweeping changes in the country's national security forces following the lapses.
Last week, Nasheed, who is parliament speaker, narrowly escaped an assassination bid when an IED exploded near his car just outside his home. He went through multiple lifesaving surgeries and now is said to be stable.
So far three people have been arrested in the case. However, in court they denied their involvement in the incident.
